Irrigation Pump Stations
A Key Part of Water Conservation
Without a pump station and its corresponding equipment, there wouldn’t be a way to divert water from its source to your irrigation system. That’s why we put so much thought into designing irrigation and installing all our pump stations.
How A Pump Station Works
In general, a water pump is used to move water from one place to another. The specific purpose of the pump dictates how this feat is accomplished.
For irrigation systems, the pump station needs to create enough pressure to counteract gravity and move water from Point A to Point B. Variables such as pipe width, elevation, and distance are considered when calculating the water’s required flow rate.
Pump stations require a power source, so sometimes additional permits are needed to get electrical to the pump. Alternate power sources, such as solar, can be incorporated into the irrigation system when feasible. We can explore all available options when we can design an irrigation solution with you.
Types of Pump Stations from Colorado Outdoor Environments
We create pumping solutions to fit your needs, whether you’re looking for golf irrigation or ways to water crops.
- Centrifugal Pump
- Vertical Turbine Pump
- Submersible Well Pump
What is A Centrifugal Irrigation Pump?
This is one of the most common types of irrigation pumps used today. While different designs fall under the centrifugal pump umbrella, the basic principle is that an impeller spins the water rapidly so it is forced through the pump casing and out of the pump. Think of it like a salad spinner filled with water; when you pump the mechanism in the center up and down (the impeller), the slotted basin spins and forces the water to spill out the sides of the basin.
What is a Vertical Turbine Pump?
A turbine pump combines a submersible pump with an above-ground motor. Since the motor cannot be submerged, it is housed on dry land with a drive shaft connecting it to the pump underwater. This is a common system for large farms, golf courses, or municipal projects.
What is a Submersible Well Pump?
A submersible pump is a type of centrifugal pump that can be installed underwater. The motor can be designed to be submersible as well. Since the pump is already surrounded by water, submersible pumps don’t need to be primed like those on dry ground.
How to Choose the Right Pump in Colorado
Choosing the right pump for your irrigation needs depends on a few factors, such as:
- Capacity – the maximum flow rate the pump can achieve under optimal operating conditions
- Demand – the average or peak flow rate required for the project
- Efficiency – the ratio of output vs the energy required to power the pump
- Energy – the amount of energy consumed by the system
- Reliability – how will the pump perform in the conditions on-site?
- Availability – what is the percentage of time that the pumping station will be able to perform as required?
- Safety – how will the pump station installation affect the environment and the public?
- Cost – are the expenses worth the benefits of this specific pump?
The right pump could last anywhere between 15 and 20 years, so it’s important to carefully consider your needs and have a pump station professionally installed. Let Colorado Outdoor Environments help you design a custom irrigation solution with a quality pump station at its heart.
